ON THE WAY

Community

The Augustinian Community of the Monastery of Saint Mary of La Vid, following the spirit of Saint Augustine and the secular tradition of the Order, maintains the balance between contemplation and pastoral action at the service of people, always keeping in mind that no one should be so absorbed in contemplation as to ignore the good of others, nor so busy that they neglect to contemplate divine truth.

We intend to seek God, find him and share the Truth that we discover with the brothers and with everyone. We do this by celebrating liturgical prayer in community, dedicating ourselves to community and personal meditation, and regularly reading the Word of God.

Novitiate

Gathered in community to serve the Church and the people, we dedicate ourselves first of all to the formation of those young people who, feeling the call of the Lord and responding generously, carry out their novitiate. The Monastery is the seat of the Interprovincial Novitiate of the southern European provinces (Italy, Malta and the single province of Spain). Under the direction of the Novice Master, accompanied in their work by a team of trainers and with the support of the entire community, the young people deepen their knowledge of the Lord and the Augustinian way of life, preparing to give a Yes to Christ when make their religious profession in the Order of Saint Augustine.

We are aware that our tradition and service to the Church in today’s world require us to dedicate ourselves personally and as a community to study and make ourselves present in the world of culture. The Augustinians of La Vid have also opted for this field of apostolate through the attention to the people who visit us, also being a home of Welcome and Spirituality. For this, we have created the “Hostelry Monastery of La Vid” which opens its doors as a three-star hotel and also promotes and creates activities in the “Centre for Augustinian Spirituality”. We also serve a large Library, increasing its funds and making them available to researchers. With all this we are providing our visitors with the works of art preserved in the monastery. They have been displayed in the Museum to which visitors can access, as a testimony to the cultural fertility of Faith.

Presence in the surrounding parishes

On the other hand, we become part of the local Church, ministering pastorally to the parishes of La Vid, Guma and Zuzones and helping the surrounding Christian communities when required by their parish priests.

Convinced that our community dimension does not end with ourselves, but must be open to communion with humanity, we want to communicate to people, with simplicity and without pride, our vital witness as consecrated, clumsy and often inconsistent, but in deep love to the Lord who called us. For this, we have opened the doors of our house and the heart of our community and thus, whoever wishes can share prayer, life and bread with us while spending a few days in the Monastery.
